The Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Changes Name to Reflect Its Mission
To reflect its expanding role in enhancing cultural life in the western Carolinas, The Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, has changed its name to Upstairs Artspace effective Feb. 23, 2006.
"We are more than just a gallery demonstrating the 'cutting edge' of contemporary arts and crafts," said Mike Patterson, president of the Upstairs. "We are a place where art is alive and provocative - a stimulating cultural center taking appreciation of art to a new level in the region."
Founded more than 27 years ago in Tryon, Upstairs Artspace was the original name of the organization. As it evolved from the upstairs bedroom of artist Craig Pleasants into several progressively larger locations in the downtown area, it became known as The Upstairs Gallery. Over the years it has featured works of hundreds of emerging and seasoned artists, many from within a 100-mile radius of Tryon.
Patterson noted that since moving into its own renovated building at 49 South Trade Street in historic downtown Tryon, the 501(c)3 organization has expanded its offerings to include three galleries and a number of educational programs and special events such as the sculpture walk and the critically acclaimed Harlem Renaissance: Jazz and More series.
"Our new name brings with it an even greater commitment to promoting emerging and established regional artists, to satisfying art lovers and fostering appreciation of the visual arts, and to enhancing the cultural profile of this very unique community," Patterson added.
"Upstairs Artspace is - a cultural center with art education programs, workshops, community forums and much more. It is designed to appeal to students as well as senior citizens; serious collectors as well as casual observers interested in what's new and changing in visual arts. It is a vibrant, creative regional contemporary art center - a happening place".
"Our mission is to be a destination - not only regionally, but throughout the Southeast - that positively impacts the artistic development of the area. We aspire to becoming the trendsetter for small community art programs across the nation."
The two-and-a-half story building offers about 3000 square feet of exhibition and multi-purpose space optimally arranged to house the art-related programs and activities for which the Upstairs is known.
Upstairs Artspace is managed by a board of directors consisting of art and community leaders and two paid staff members who operate the gallery Tuesday through Saturday each week. Exhibits, organized by experienced volunteer curators, currently change every four to six weeks.
Ensuing exhibits at the Upstairs during 2006 will feature such diverse subjects and art forms as botanical art, textile art, prints, encaustics, works on paper, minimalist art and many more art and craft genres and styles.
