Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Features New Exhibits for Spring
On Mar. 2, 2007, Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, will open three new exhibits at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts including: The Graphic Imperative: International Posters of Peace, Social Justice and The Environment 1965-2005, on view in the Main Gallery through June 2, 2007; 4th Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition and Exhibition, on view in the Mezzanine Gallery through June 2, 2007; and Walking History - Gwendolyn Nicole Allen, on view in the Catwalk Community Gallery through Apr. 21, 2007.

The Graphic Imperative was organized by Elizabeth Resnick, Chaz Maviyane-Davies and Frank Basemen in partnership with the Massachusetts College of Art and Philadelphia University. This exhibition is a select retrospective of 40 years of international sociopolitical posters. Themes include dissent, liberation, racism, sexism, human rights, civil rights, environmental and health concerns, AIDS, war, literacy and tolerance, collectively providing a window to an age of great change. Focusing on the issues of turbulent times, these 121 posters endeavor to show the social, political and aesthetic concerns of many cultures in a single exhibition through delineating themes and contrasting political realities.
French graphic designer Pierre Bernard proposes, "The poster is the prime field for experimenting with visual language. It is the scene of changing ides and aesthetics, of cultural, social and political events." Support for this proposition can be found in the works selected for this exhibition.
The 4th Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition and Exhibition provides amateur and professional photographers the opportunity to showcase their interpretations of the unique character, people, places, and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians. Categories include: Culture, Environment, Adventure, Landscape, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Flora/Fauna. Prize packages and cash awards are made possible through the support of generous sponsors and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.
This exhibition is a partnership between the university's Office of Outdoor Programs, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. A portion of the proceeds from the 2007 Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition supports the Student Outdoor Learning Expedition (SOLE) Scholarship Fund. SOLE trips are educational journeys of discovery that take ASU students around the world.
ASU Graduate Gwendolyn Nicole Allen will feature Walking History in the Catwalk Community Gallery. Allen, who graduated in Dec. 2006 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with concentrations in painting and printmaking, exhibits her most recent work exploring materials and processes associated with mixed media work.
These exhibits join three other exhibitions currently on view at the Center including: The 86th National Watercolor Exhibition, Anne Kesler Shields' Earthly Delights in the 21st Century, and Watercolor Works from the Turchin Center's Permanent Collection.
The Spring exhibitions are supported by Cheap Joe's Art Supply in Boone.
"Cheap Joe's support of the Spring Exhibition Celebration is the latest example in a long history of support for the arts in the High Country, and their participation with this event was spurred by their long-time association with and support of the National Watercolor Society," said Hank Foreman, director and chief curator of the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. "Cheap Joe's and its founder Joe Miller have contributed greatly to ensure the important tradition of water media painting continues to thrive, and that artists embrace their own creativity and individuality when working with water media."
