Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Calvin Edney

The Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, will present an exhibit of works by local artist Calvin Edney, to be held in the Boardroom Gallery from Mar. 2 through Apr. 27, 2007. The exhibit includes landscapes, cityscapes and still life paintings.

A native of western North Carolina, Edney was interested in the arts even as a young man, particularly classical music and theatre. He had experimented with the visual arts, but it wasn't until 1996 that he began to paint in earnest. At that time, he enrolled at the UNC-Asheville, where he studied with Robert Tynes, Virginia Derryberry and Robert Dunning, among others.

Influenced by his love of this area, Edney began painting landscapes, a genre he continues to explore. He also does still life and architectural paintings. Though he started working with acrylics, Edney recalls fondly the class that introduced him to "the magical world of oil painting." Today, he creates bold compositions in bright colors, many of which have been reproduced as giclees.
