March Issue 2007
Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, Features Group Exhibition
Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, New Works, featuring new works by many of the gallery's artists, on view from Mar. 2 - 31, 2007. Artists with new works, portraying the South, include Stephen Chesley, Craig Crawford, Julyan Davis, Johnson Hagood, Tom McNickle, Margaret Peery, Joe Ruiz, Helen Stewart, Stephen Scott Young and Evan Wilson.
The gallery artists each have a unique style that creates a subtle, elegant variety when grouped as in this show. Stephen Chesley presents his jewel like deep colors. Craig Crawford shows his other-century approach to painting. Julyan Davis's soft strokes bring to mind the fresh breezes of the South. Johnson Hagood, industriously back to painting luminous marshscapes, strives to give homage to the masters of early America.
Tom McNickle with his colorful representation of the area surrounding us reminds us of the energy of color. Margaret Peery finds joy in the atmospheric presentation of local scenery. Joe Ruiz is a new artist on the scene lately moved to Georgia from the west. Helen Stewart's naive approach to painting is reminiscent of simpler times.
Evan Wilson -----------------------------------------------Stephen Scott Young
As the local outlet for the well known, Stephen Scott Young and reintroducing Evan Wilson to the Charleston art collectors, Carolina Galleries provides an ongoing dialogue between the subject matter, the artist, the viewer and collector. The gallery continues a long history of visual reminders of the beauty of our surroundings, our place in history and our love of beauty and its bountiful presence here.
In addition to being Charleston's gallery of longevity (since 1963) specializing in the art of the Charleston Renaissance, Carolina Galleries' contemporary paintings celebrate the region's continuing aesthetic evolution. A walk through the gallery is equivalent to a journey through time, with works on display spanning from the 1890's to the present. Landscapes and genre scenes represent two centuries in Charleston art, with a focus on nineteenth and twentieth century masterpieces. Paintings, etchings and drawings grace the walls of the gallery thanks to the artists who preserved the city both in their art and by demanding preservation. Glimpses of what was and what is can be found. Covering two distinct periods in one distinct gallery, Carolina Galleries has been profiled in Architectural Digest, National Geographic Explorer, Southern Accents, and Town & Country.
