City of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Stephanie Smith
The City of Charleston will present an exhibit entitled, Sewn, featuring fabric college by Sullivan's Island, SC, artist, Stephanie Smith, at the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC. The exhibition opens on Mar. 9 and continues through Apr. 6, 2007.
Smith was born in Akron, OH, and received a MA in Art from Kent State University. She has taught art at university, secondary and elementary levels. Smith has been a resident of Sullivan's Island for 35 years. She has shown in many one woman and group exhibitions including at the Gibbes Museum of Art and the South Carolina State Museum as well as may galleries in the Charleston area. One of her pieces included in the South Carolina State Art Collection.
Smith offers the following on her work: "I am enamored with birds because of their strength and majesty and the freedom of shape and color that can be used in their representations. I have experimented with their images in a variety of media and have found that the soft movement of fabric and the textural qualities of thread enabled me to better define them."
"My new series is iconic in style to express their spiritual nature," adds Smith. "My inspiration is working with pattern, shape, color, texture, and the juxtaposition of geometric and organic forms. I combine stitchery with paper and fabric collage. These techniques contrast and compliment each other to create a stronger statement than if used in isolation. Stitchery allows me to express the elegance of birds and their sensitive habitats. Fabric allows for flow and motion beyond a traditional border suggesting the possibility of flight."
