March Issue 2007
Edward Dare Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jim Darlington
Edward Dare Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, In a Different Light, featuring new work by painter and musician Jim Darlington. The exhibit will be on view from Mar. 2 - 31, 2007.
Darlington is a native South Carolinian who has spent a lifetime immersed in the arts. He continues to receive award recognition for his portraiture, representational and abstract works in both oil and watercolor.
According to Darlington, this latest series of paintings came about, "as a result of utilizing abstract expressionist brushwork and ideas to paint scenes characteristic of the lowcountry of South Carolina. I usually begin a painting by applying large flat areas of color to a background which is colored either red or dark umber. Sometimes I have composition in mind; other times I let the movement of the brush suggest forms. I build upon these forms, or change them, until I have a painting that conveys a certain mood, or an aspect of the landscape which I feel is authentic. I plan to bring even more abstract qualities into my work, but I also feel I could never completely abandon the realist/impressionist style, simply because it is my first love and contains within it such rich means of expression."
In addition to the landscapes in this series, Darlington has applied this same technique to create figurative works in a similar style; these pieces will also be featured during this show.
Darlington is a prolific painter who's body
of work encompasses many subjects: lush and steamy landscapes
and architectural vignettes, rich in hues that capture the moods
of the lowcountry, mesmerizing and sometimes haunting figurative
pieces, and abstracts that result in contemplation of the meaning
beyond the canvas. The challenge of developing abstract compositions
- taking a subject that has inspired him and transforming it into
something that the viewer will consider and relate to emotionally,
rather than simply knowing that "well, it's a house"
is an area that Darlington particularly enjoys.
In his abstract pieces Darlington strives to keep the complimentary
colors in the center of the canvas, pulling the viewer's eye in,
with the colors on the outside being simpler, purer color with
some tonal variation. However, portraiture is the area that he
enjoys the most; often combining features from several models
and rendering an image of a person created in the artist's mind.
Darlington is a member with Excellence in the SC Watercolor Society and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He is an instructor at Creative Spark School for the Arts in Mt. Pleasant, SC, where he teaches adult classes in watercolor and oils, and he also teaches private classes locally. He has worked as a journalist and an art critic in the past and you can also see the musical side of the artist if you catch a performance of his band, a local favorite, Minimum Wage.
More work by Darlington can be seen at Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan's Island, SC.
