Hatfield II Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Sally Hughes Smith
Hatfield II Fine Art in Charleston, SC, is presenting an exhibit, The Heart of the Matter, of paintings by Charleston artist Sally Hughes Smith. The exhibit opens Mar. 1 and continues through Mar. 10, 2007.
Come for a visit and stay for a while. View the art that comes from the heart and speaks to the heart. The paintings grow out of a sense of wonder and excitement from the connection we share with the world. Share and feel the excitement that is at the heart of the matter. Five percent of the sales will be contributed to research into Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases and other age-related problems.
Born in Memphis, TN, Smith graduated from Duke University with a major in English and a focus on fine art. Her love of painting took her to the Boston Museum School of Fine Art, where she studied composition and painting techniques. Afterwards, Smith married, moved to Charleston, and reared four children, but never lost her passion for drawing and painting.
Smith's perception of landscapes and nature is vibrantly expressed in her colorful palette; perhaps her strongest point is the freedom with which she uses color to capture a feeling for the very essence of the natural elements which surround us all. Her spontaneous treatment of sun-dappled hills and lakes is Impressionistic in style, which is especially appropriate for the landscapes of Europe.
Smith has made numerous trips to Italy in recent years, where she practices the plein aire technique to great advantage. She has had over 25 one-woman shows and has participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout the southeast since becoming a full-time artist in 1988. Smith's work is in private and corporate collections in over 75 cities here and abroad. She has written and illustrated a children's book which is now in its second printing. Her work shows enormous consciousness of the beauty in nature, and celebrates the vivid quality of light and atmosphere.
