Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Photographs by Rick Dean
Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present Water Ways, a series of fine art photographs by local artist Rick Dean, from Mar. 1 - 31, 2007.
This collection of photographs transforms our waterways from the urbane to the abstract. Water is such an important part of the lowcountry economy from oceans to the rivers and tidal marshes that feed our environment, artist Rick Dean re-looks at these everyday places to bring a life to the ways we see water.
Through photographiac techniques, not computer techniques this body of work takes the commonplace and creates abstract waterscapes that are painted with light and motion bringing forth a canvas of vibrant colors, subtle textures that showcase the serene, gentle spaces we share.
A transplant to Charleston, Dean is still experiencing his new home with child-like wonder. One of the primary reasons for choosing Charleston for his new home is the environment and the proximity to the ocean. As an artist, Dean is called to the water. "It is my hope that in creating these dramatic and colorful interpretations of our waterways that I can inspire others to cherish and protect the ecosystems that we share," Dean says.
In the Ocean Abstracts series, these photographs blend the sunset over the ocean with the ebb and flow of the tides as the sun leaves us for the day all transpiring in just minutes. In the Marsh Abstracts series, the photographs draw forth the rich variation in hot colors that hide in the grasses juxtaposed against the cool blues of the estuaries as they flow back into the ocean.
