March Issue 2007

Mary Martin Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Randall LaGro

Mary Martin Gallery of Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will be presenting an exhibit of works by up and coming painter Randall LaGro, from Taos, NM. The exhibition will be on view from Mar. 2 - 31, 2007.

LaGro is described as an intuitive artist, never planning any of his paintings before he begins to work. This process of the unknown defines his work. He builds up layers of glazes and paint and then lines and forms start taking shape and defining the painting. LaGro uniquely combines the real and the abstract together in his art to create beautiful mysterious pieces that are getting the attention of well known collectors all over the country. LaGro also produces beautiful one-of-a-kind monotypes, each having a life of its own.

LaGro studied at El Camino College in Torrance, CA, the Graduate Academy of Art in San Francisco, and Graphic Impressions in Taos. As a painter and printmaker, he combines elements of the conscious and subconscious. LaGro explains, "I want to speak to the poets, artists and philosophers, but I don't want to lose the guy on the tractor. Art has always been language to me - that's its power."

LaGro's visions are enigmatic and seem to take the viewer on a journey. They are sensual, strange, powerful, even nightmarish. LaGro often begins by writing down an idea, title, or concept to be translated into a work of art.

His unique monotypes are monochromatic pieces that derive from dreams and the subconscious. Images advance and recede eerily and appear ever changing; the viewer is often confronted with a profusion of elements in a depth of layers.

LaGro's painting process is vigorous and passionate. He uses rich and somber tones on large-scale canvasses or wood panels. He portrays elements of humanity, both the common and the extraordinary. Figures emerge from spaces of unorthodox perspective and may be unsettling or disturbing. The atmosphere is ethereal, with reflective surfaces such as water and glass, challenging to discern.
