March Issue 2007
Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Robert Brown
Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will feature a solo exhibition of new paintings by Carolina native Robert Brown. The exhibit opens on Mar. 2 and will remain on display through Apr. 14, 2007.
If Brown's landscapes could talk they would speak with the sensible and honest authority of a native tongue; the soft unhurried voice of someone that "grew where they were planted" and is in no hurry to leave. Brown approaches his subject matter on foot, settles in like an old friend, and paints what he sees. His distinctive brushwork, endearing themes, and pleasingly subtle palette make him a highly collectable local favorite.
Brown's oil paintings reflect his ramblings along the east coast and reveal an astute appreciation for the everyday experience. This latest collection resonates with tender reverence for the modest architecture, pastoral splendor, and less traveled back roads of the American southeast. Brown's paintings are particularly relevant in both contrast and tribute to our region's ever changing urban landscape.
Born in 1954 in Anderson, SC, Brown attended undergraduate school at Appalachian State and received his Master's degree from Wake Forest University. He studied art privately in Charlotte, Asheville, and Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 2002-2004. Brown currently resides in Kannapolis, NC.
