March Issue 2007

Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC, Features Works by Gary Page

The Tryon Painters & Sculptors will present the watercolor paintings of Gary Page who resides in Landrum, SC, in Gallery I of the Tryon Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC. The exhibit will be on view from Mar. 4 through Apr. 19, 2007.

Page has captured the historic Polk County Courthouse as decades of citizens have seen it. His love for the area and rural southern life is evident in each watercolor he paints. Page has established himself as an important local artist since 1985 when he "discovered" watercolor.

Born in Tryon in 1954, Page began his interest in art at the early age of 12. He studied art in the late 1960's under artist Karl Lohse. In the early 1970's Page considered a career in commercial art and enrolled in the Famous Artist School of Westport, CT. Early training for the artist was in drawing and painting in oil, both of which greatly contributed to his work in watercolor. Working exclusively in watercolor at present, Page enjoys painting scenes from everyday life and historic buildings found in his native region.

Reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth in his choice of color and subject, Page's scenes are meticulously rendered in watercolor. The artist has a unique talent for capturing the grandeur of historic structures. Page's works include both interior and exterior paintings, with most paintings being done with drybrush watercolor.

"My art reflects rural southern life. Southern people and their homes have been very influential in my life and work. Painting the people and places around me realistically and authentically gives me great satisfaction," says Page.

Over the years Page has won art awards from the Western North Carolina Juried Art Exhibit. Page has exhibited in several one person art shows in Western North Carolina and Upper South Carolina. His artwork can be found in many corporate and private collections across the country. The artist does many commissioned works each year for people throughout North and South Carolina.
