March Issue 2007

tyler white Gallery in Greensboro, NC, Features Works by Connie Winters

tyler white Gallery in Greensboro, NC, is presenting an exhibition featuring new works by Connie Winters, on view through Mar. 10, 2007.

A featured artist in the current February/March issue of International Artist Magazine, Winters has indeed emerged as a strong influence on the art scene throughout the Southeastern United States and beyond. Citing the work of classic French Impressionists as an ongoing source of inspiration in her artwork, Winters naturally gravitates to France, particularly the rural regions of Provence and Dordogne, as locations for her colorful, vibrant landscapes. Examples of these paintings are the focus of Winters' pieces in this exhibit.

Winters travels to France each year, conducting workshops each September. She credits the provincial lifestyle and the simplistic beauty encountered there, with giving her a renewed sense of spirituality and artistic inspiration.

Winters studied painting with a number of notable artists including: North Carolina Pulitzer Prize winner, Phillip Moose, Shirley Markham, and Alice Steadman. She has also studied at the famous Chatov Studio in Atlanta.

Winters credits these influences with teaching her the vital importance of "painting from life". Starting a painting in plein air and then finishing in the studio from a photograph, Winters asserts this gives her the best of both worlds; allowing her to concentrate on values and light, shapes, and finally details with splashes of the brilliant color for which she has become renowned.

Following in the footsteps of traditional Impressionists, Winters uses color to capture the light of the natural world. However, her paintings illustrate her own distinctive style, rendering values as they evolve due to changes in light and shadow; seamlessly combining warm and cool colors throughout her paintings.

Winters purposely keeps her compositions loose, forgoing excessive detail as a means of inviting the viewer to actively participate in the journey each painting represents. Winters expresses her philosophy, "I believe suggestion is more intriguing than having every detail drawn."

Thus, the observer is encouraged to use their imagination and freely bring their own life experience to their interpretations of Winters work, encouraging each individual to make a unique connection with her paintings.

Winters paintings are represented in many distinguished collections including: the Coca-Cola Collection, the private collection of John Randolph Hearst, Jr. and the Duke Mansion, Charlotte, NC.
