Self-Guided Tour of Studios & Galleries in Western NC

Fifty sites will be featured on the Toe River Arts Council's Spring Studio Tour 2000 which takes place on Sat., May 6 and Sun., May 7 in Western North Carolina. Tour hours are from 10am to 5pm both days.

It is a rare opportunity for many of these studios to be open, though the galleries stay open for the better part of the year with regular hours. A map and signs lead the visitors to their destinations that are peppered throughout Mitchell and Yancey Counties stretching from Little Switzerland to the Toe Cane Region. You can also find studios, galleries and gardeners at these areas as well: Penland School region, Celo area on Highway 80 South, Kona region on Highway 80 North, Green Mountain, Bakersville, Spruce Pine and Burnsville, plus other areas in between.

The artists invite the public to their studios for this informal open house and sales. Items found along the tour include hand-blown glass, hand-formed and wheel-turned pottery, hand woven garments and wall hangings, paintings of all sorts, baskets, handmade paper art, stained glass, metals, jewelry, sculptures, hand-turned wood items... and much more. A few local gardeners join us to offer plants, bulbs and garden supplies in time for spring planting.

Join us for a day's drive in this self-guided tour. A printed map and yellow signs also direct the travelers to their destinations. Maps are available at various locations, all participating galleries and studios and on the web at (http://main.nc.us/TRAC).
