The Gallery at Carillon in Uptown Charlotte, NC, Features A Clay Invitational
The Gallery at Carillon, in the Carillon Building, in Uptown Charlotte, NC, is hosting a clay invitational entitled, Human Evolution, which will be on view through July 15, 2001.
The exhibition was organized in conjunction with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts' 35th Annual Conference which took place in Charlotte last month.
The collection on view will range from table-top
ceramic forms to large scale installations - all representing
distinct voices addressing the human condition. The exhibition
features the work of Beverly Crist (Los Angeles, CA); David Hooker
(Spartanburg, SC); Mike Knox (LaCrescent, MN); Kirk Mangus (Kent,
OH); Ralph Pàguin (Spartanburg, SC); and Paula Smith (Rock
Hill, SC).
David Hooker, curator of Human Evolution, selected artists
whose work responded to the dramatic space of the gallery. "I
wanted to feature artists whose expressions compliment the Jean
Tinguely sculpture that dominates the space," stated Hooker.
"As with the Tinguely, the attention to details - or parts
- is what brings forth its greatness. All of our work is big and
weird too".
In addition to the artists' fascination with making objects that engage the space, another underlying theme revolves around the human condition. Each artist derives his/her concepts from personal experiences, visions and observations. The clay medium serves as the common denominator for this exploration.
