McMaster Gallery Features Works by Katherine Perry

The McMaster Gallery at the Department of Art at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, is presenting an exhibition of photographs by Katherine Perry entitled, Plastique. The exhibition will be on view from Apr. 23-28, 2001.

The images in the exhibition, Plastique, deconstruct the women's magazine industry both visually and textually. The photographic elements of the work utilize implied tears as the device for deconstruction. These tears reveal the contrasts between the real, the ideal, and the super real. The text is a compilation of one specific topic from one year of a magazine's cover stories. Through the use of the magazine's own text the industry is mimicked by their own language. Also, the repetition of the topics shows that the same items are discussed over and over again throughout the course of a year. The images are digitally manipulated photographs, which are then printed as transparencies and displayed in illuminated boxes.

Katherine Perry, is an MFA graduate student with a concentration in photography, at the University of South Carolina. The exhibition, Plastique, is her thesis exhibition. Perry is originally from the Washington, DC, area and spent her undergraduate year at Shepherd College in WV.
