SC Watercolor Society's Annual Workshop Headed for Beaufort, SC

Michael Schlicting, this year's juror of the SC Watercolor Society's 24th Annual Awards Exhibition, will conduct a watermedia workshop entitled, Going Beyond the Obvious, which will take place at the Greene Street Art Center in Beaufort, SC, from Apr. 23-27.

Schlicting is one of the Northwest's outstanding watercolor artists. He received his BA in Fine Arts from Principia College in Elsah, IL, in 1977. He has won top honors at both the American Watercolor Society (AWS) and National Watercolor Society annual exhibitions as well as many other state and regional shows. He was elected to AWS in 1990 and has been a National Vice President. In addition to painting, Schlicting has juried and taught workshops across the western and middle United States as well as Italy and France. His work has been included in numerous publications including the 1995 & 1997 Best of Watercolor: Shadow & Composition; the 1996 Places in Watercolor, Abstracts in Watercolor, and Creative Watercolor, all by Rockport Publishers; the 1996 & 1989 American Artist Magazine, and the 1993 & 1990, Splash I & II by Northlight Publishers. You may view more of his work on his web site: (http://www.michaelschlicting.com).

Coastal forms, water-worn rocks, and tideline patterns are rich compositional material for the artist. In each workshop, he stresses bold composition, intense color, and personal development. "In my workshops, I stress the individual development of the student rather than mere copying of the instructor's techniques. I stress the creation of exciting composition with strong design and value patterns from the student's own reference materials, using monochromatic value studies and thumbnail sketches. We learn to break a subject down into shape, form, color, and value to create meaningful composition and I try to get students to go beyond their usual solutions to creative problems. Ideas and concepts are demonstrated, not just on how to create art, but why we create it. We discuss the philosophy of the creative process, why we paint what we do, and how it can be more personally fulfilling. In my own painting I am always experimenting with various approaches and incorporating them into my body of work and so I try to bring this joy of discovery to the students."

The watermedia workshop entitled, Going Beyond the Obvious, will take place at the Greene Street Art Center in Beaufort, SC, during Apr. 23-27, from 9am-4:30pm daily. Enrollment is limited to 25 students and the fee is $295. Registration is on a first- come, first- serve basis and there are a few spaces left.
