April Issue 2001
Studio South Group to Exhibit at The Summer House Gallery in Highlands, NC
There is a group of fascinating artists based
in the Greenville/Spartanburg area of South Carolina. They work
together under the name of Studio South. Eleven of these
artist will be exhibiting at The Summer House Gallery in Highlands,
NC. The exhibition, entitled, Simply, Red!, opens Apr.
21 and continues through May 16.
Simply, Red!, is the offshoot of two exhibitions Studio
South produced in the last couple of years. In 1999 they combined
works to exhibit Artists Get The Blues, an exhibit with
a blue palette. The year 2000 brought on a new challenge - Seeing
Red. The red palette proved to be so strong and provocative
they continued with the challenge to produce the exhibit, Simply,
Red! for the 2001 exhibition season. The subject matter is
as diverse as the artist themselves, ranging from landscapes to
still life to abstracts. The only common factor in this exhibition
is the color red.
The artist of Studio South share a great love of painting. Though their artwork is very diverse, ranging from traditional to contemporary, from realistic to non-objective, their love of painting and of art joins them together. They hail from all over the Upstate of South Carolina and from Western North Carolina, meeting regularly to paint, to learn and to share ideas. This exchange of ideas encourages and challenges each individual to continue to grow and to push for new and creative means of expression. The mediums used by these artists also vary, though many work in water based mediums, or some combination of "aqua-media". The mediums usually include watercolor, acrylics, collage and some artists may also utilize pastels or charcoal.
The artists exhibiting are: Lorraine Martinie, Bobbi Stitt, Mary Ellen Suitt, Monita Mahoney, Marilyn Murrell, Lois Cantrell, Jane Todd Butcher, Ruth Hopkins, Rosemary Moore, Carrie Brown, and Randolph N. Armstrong.
