Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC, Presents Three Exhibitions in April
The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum will come alive Saturday evening, April 6, with the opening of three new exhibitions. The public is invited to view Georgetown watercolorist Betty Robinson's Seasoned Landscapes exhibit of 32 recent works, along with the 30 award winning pieces from the South Carolina Watercolor Society's 24th Annual Exhibition and 74 juried works by high school students from throughout Horry and Georgetown counties. Awards will be presented for the high school exhibition at 6:30pm, followed by a 7pm gallery talk with Betty Robinson.
Betty Robinson
A native of Greer, SC, Robinson has lived and painted in the Georgetown area for more than a decade. The marshes, shores, and light of Lowcountry settings are reflected in her virtuoso layered works in watercolor and color pencil She has exhibited widely throughout SC and the Southeast and has received numerous awards, including the best of show award in the South Carolina Watercolor Society 2lst Annual Exhibition in 1998. In addition to her member in excellence status in the South Carolina Watercolor Society and frequent inclusion in its juried exhibitions, she is a past president and lifetime honorary member of the Tennessee Watercolor Society. Her works are in numerous institutional and corporate collections.
The Museum takes particular pleasure in hosting the SCWS's 24th Annual Awards Exhibition as the $1,000 best in show award went to local painter Alex Powers for his piece One and All. The show opened at the Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head Island in May of 2001, when 65 pieces were selected from 243 entries by juror Michael Schlicting. The top 30 pieces, which garnered $10,550 in artist awards, have traveled to eight other locations throughout the state of South Carolina during the year. The tour, coordinated by the South Carolina State Museum, concludes in May, 2002.
A showcase for the artistic talents of area students, the Horry & Georgetown County High Schools Juried Exhibit will feature pieces selected by well-known local artists and teachers Elizabeth Keller and Bruce Chandler. Almost $700 in prize monies will be awarded to students during the opening reception. All nine Horry County high schools and Waccamaw and Georgetown high schools of Georgetown County will be represented with an array of widely diverse works and media reflecting teenagers' eclectic approaches to life. The show, which was coordinated by Carolina Forest art teacher Reatha Wilkins, has been sponsored by the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild for the last two years to provide an opportunity for students to prepare works for exhibition in a professional setting.
