April Issue 2002
Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Features Works by John Phillip Osborne
Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will exhibit a collection of new small works by John Phillip Osborne. The debut show for the artist at Coleman Fine Art will include scenes of Ireland, Newfoundland, and regional coastal waterways. The exhibit will remain in the gallery through May 31, 2002.
For over thirty years Osborne has been painting nature's most tranquil moments and trying to "see beyond the obvious." As a landscape artist and teacher, he prefers to paint outside directly from nature, en p1ein-air. Osborne has, in recent years, garnered a national reputation for his keen handling of light and his attention to atmospheric effects. Near his home in Ringwood, NJ, Osborne sets out each day to record the sensations of specific times of day, the seasons and the changing weather conditions of the landscape around him.
With timeless subjects, Osborne's paintings have been compared to the late 19th century artists such as George Inness and Camille Corot of the Barbizon school. Using the centuries old tradition of painting on a toned canvas, Osborne uses the slow process of building up a painting with layers of colored glazes, giving his works their trademark glow.
For Osborne, painting en p1ein-air is a thrilling experience, as well as a vocation that for him warrants a quiet reverence. The works of this highly gifted artist introduce us to the spectacular world around him, as well as his emotions.
