Center for Craft, Creativity and Design Another Asset in NC's Craft Market Offers Several Exhibitions
The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design
is a regional inter-institutional Center of the University of
North Carolina with an active non-profit support organization,
the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, Inc. Located on
50 plus acres in Hendersonville, NC, adjacent to the Kellogg Conference
Center, the Center was developed to provide a greater focus on
craft within academia, working closely with the three UNC campuses
in Western North Carolina - Appalachian State University, in Boone;
Western Carolina University, in Cullowhee; and the University
of North Carolina-Asheville, the administrative unit. The Center
also plans to further collaborative projects between universities
and the strong craft organizations and artists within the state.
The Center offers regular shows and exhibitions, plus a lecture
series called the Tea Time Talks. Each exhibit focuses on certain
aspects of the craft or design in Western North Carolina, while
simultaneously bringing together artists, students and professors.
Tea Time Talks are held in conjunction with each show during which
a guest speaker provides further insight into the content of the
exhibition.
During Mar. and Apr. of 2002, the Center is acting as host for shows curated by our three partner Universities. Each university will utilize the gallery space in the way they best feel will showcase the talent of their students and professors. Appalachian State University will hold their show from Mar 1 - 18, the University of North Carolina-Asheville from Mar. 22 - Apr. 9, and Western Carolina University from Apr. 12 - 29. In May, the works of an environmental artist in residence during the month of Apr. will be on display.
A Craft Trails Artists Exhibition will be held each summer to recognize the artists who live and work in Western North Carolina and are featured in the guide, Craft Heritage Trails of Western North Carolina, created by Handmade in America. The third edition will be released during the summer 2002 exhibition. The Exhibition features artists from each section of the trails and type of craft. From woodworkers to glass blowers, this exhibit encompasses the fantastic artistry that can be viewed in North Carolina.
The center is also coordinating a residency with renowned wood sculptor David Nash in Apr. 2003. Nash was recently spotlighted by Sculpture Magazine (Dec. 2001), as their feature artist. Nash has been working primarily with living materials (trees, moss, etc.) as his media since the 1970s. Students from UNCA, WCU, ASU and Eastern Carolina University will participate in the residency held in Penland, NC. The residency will also include a 2-day discussion of contemporary art with 10 established national artists including a Visiting Artist from each of the 4 UNC campuses, and a juried exhibition at the Center of the work of sculpture students from 16 North Carolina campuses. Work created in 2003 at the "Wood Quarry- A Creative Process" residency will be exhibited in the mountains, Piemont and Coast.
The Center is also coordinating a collaborative project for the Kennedy Center "ArtsEdge Website" to create lesson plans that integrate craft into basic curriculum of grades K-8. When the curriculum is completed, a fully interactive, age-specific web site will be created for students.
