Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Yvonne Stark

The Hilton Head Art League in Hilton Head, SC, presents Moments in Time, an exhibition of oil paintings by artist and teacher, Yvonne Stark. The show will feature oil paintings inspired by the places Stark knows well and loves. Most of her impressionistic landscapes have themes of Hilton Head Island, the Colorado Rockies, England and France. Stark's still life paintings are executed in her teaching studios from real life set ups.The show will be on view through Apr. 20, 2002.

Stark received a doctorate in law and then practiced in St. Louis and Aspen, CO. In her free time, she would ski and hike into the high mountains to paint. She later retired from law to follow her developing passion for painting. She first enrolled as an art student at the University of South Dakota, and later took classes with master teachers of the Scottsdale Art School. In the late eighties she enrolled for three summer sessions in painting and drawing at Oxford University, England. Stark believes firmly that painting is an endless journey of learning, and although she is now a teacher herself, she continues her studies.

In the early 1990's, Stark began teaching oil painting in Aspen during the summers and on Hilton Head during the winters. Many of her students from her first classes continue as students today including several Art League members.

In 1998, Stark began teaching each summer at the Denver Student's Art League. Most of her students remain under her guidance for several years. She teaches not only regular weekly classes for residents, but workshops in color harmony and mixing, fundamentals for beginners and plein air painting.

In the past four years, Stark has received two first place awards in oils in national juried shows in Aspen and Denver. For the past eight years, she has been represented by the Gallerie du Bois in Aspen. On Hilton Head Island, her work can be seen at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery, Susie Q's Tea Room, the Frazer Museum Gallery and at regional art shows.

Stark believes that teaching has enriched her life and has made her a better painter. She says, "I must practice the principles that I teach and I really have to work very hard just to keep a few steps ahead of my students. Together we are on an endless journey to develop as painters. All true artists, even teachers of painting, remain students all their lives."
