Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Charleston, SC, Presents Works by Erica Love

The Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Charleston, SC, will feature an exhibition of works by Erica Love entitled, ARMATURE, from Apr. 2 through May 1, 2002.

Erica Love negotiates through her abstract work with a sense of purpose. Amazingly, it is this sense of purpose that remains present through the spontaneity of her drips and the unpredictable swells of overlapping color. In viewing her work, one can witness the evolution from meticulously applied linear drawings to rhythmic animated paintings. This discovery is not difficult, as the artist leaves open doors of underlying color. These mysterious under layers create a strong constructive presence which becomes the armature of her work. It is this underlying order that allows her paintings to be carefree with brilliant and playful colors while still
having the seriousness of strong composition.

Love graduated from Brown University with two BA's - Visual Arts and Economics. During her time at Brown, she studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and Tyler School of Art in Rome. It was in Rome where she first developed her current style, inspired by the intricacies of Roman architecture and the simplicity of life in Southern Italy. The
artist's paintings on paper and masonite are executed in mixed mediums of charcoal, paint, inks, and pastels (not in that order and not necessarily all at once).

Love has shown her work in Rome, Providence, RI, San Francisco, CA, and Charleston, SC, where she currently resides.
