Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Features Exhibition Based on the Line
Some artists are in love with line, often using it as the sole basis for their work. The Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, has put together an exhibit to highlight distinguished regional artists who rely on line to express artistic inspiration and insight. The Line: Drawings and More features works by Peter Alberice, Tony Bradley, Jim Creal, Jim Heiser, Kenn Kotara and Dabney Mahanes. The exhibition will be on view through May 4, 2002.
This is a show of immense variety. Drawings, paintings, sketches and prints are rendered in ink, charcoal, oil, acrylic and watercolor. Subject matter ranges from the figurative to abstract art bordering on minimalism.
Alberice, Bradley and Kotara are from Asheville,
NC; Creal, Heiser and Mahanes are from upstate South Carolina.
Kotara is a full-time artist who exhibits throughout the Southeast
in solo and group shows. He is represented by galleries in Raleigh,
Charlotte, Philadelphia and Atlanta and by dealers in Los Angeles
and Chicago. Kotara is in many permanent collections including
the Asheville Art Museum, First Union National Bank and Louisiana
State Museum.
Bradley is the owner of Sotto Editions, a publisher
of fine art prints, and is co-owner of Semi-Public, an Asheville
art gallery. Warren Wilson College held a solo show of Bradley's
line work last year.
Alberice is an architect whose abstract art is based on geological
formations and jazz. Creal is a printmaker who exhibits extensively
and wins recognition in many juried shows.
Heiser is an emerging figurative artist carried by the Mary Praytor Gallery in Greenville, SC. Mahanes, also a figurative artist, exhibits regularly at the Artstuff Gallery in Greenville, and the Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC.
