April Issue 2003
Art 1 Gallery in Gastonia, NC, Features a Tribute to John Biggers with Works by David Wilson
Art 1 Gallery and Instructional Center in Gastonia, NC, will present the exhibition, A John Biggers Tribute, featuring works by Durham, NC, artist David Wilson from Apr. 10 through May 23, 2003.
Wilson's work will display an array of dynamic paintings and exquisite drawings that are mostly figurative in theme, intricate, and beautifully detailed. His paintings deal with figures involved in daily life, music, sports and love. He uses vivid colors and celebrates the active vibrancy and intimacy depicted in every day life. His style is similar to John Biggers, who he says is one of his major inspirations; he uses certain elements like huge hands with bulking knuckles, large forearms/legs or women with powerfully wide hips and lips.
Wilson's work has been nationally
published by Essence Magazine and Upscale Magazine.
He also commissioned a painting for the annual CIAA Tournament,
which takes place in Raleigh, NC.
Wilson has a strong reputation as a serious artist whose use of
lines, movements and technique have gained him national and international
appeal making him one of the more unnoticed premier artists of
today. Wilson's subject matter is a celebration of African American
culture and love. His images celebrate the distinct features of
African Americans while also using movement and selective color.
Wilson's work celebrates the
John Biggers style; and ironically Wilson studied at Hampton University,
as did Biggers. It is fitting to host this exhibit at this time
when Gastonia, Biggers' hometown, anticipates the unveiling of
a John Biggers mural.
This exhibition is sponsored by the Gaston County Department of
Tourism.
Wilson will provide an informative workshop/presentation on Apr. 11, 2003. He will provide slides of both his works and Biggers and will discuss the images, icons, fibers and similarities which exists in both. A question and answer period will follow. The fee for the event is $15.
