Cameo Fine Art in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Liisa Salosaari Jasinski

Cameo Fine Art in Columbia, SC, is pleased to be presenting a solo exhibit by Liisa Salosaari Jasinski titled, Portraits. The exhibit opens May 8 and will remain on view until May 23, 2003.

Jasinski, a Finnish-born artist has exhibited her award-winning work nationwide for the past ten years. She was born and grew up in Helsinki, Finland where she also received her Master's Degree in Psychology from the University of Helsinki. In her teens and early twenties she pursued a career in writing and translating. After graduation she came to the US to study psychotherapy. Jasinski has lived in the US since 1974 and currently resides in Newberry, SC.

Jasinski has participated in numerous one-person, two-person, invitational and group exhibitions nationwide, as well as in two public art projects in Columbia, SC. Her work has won many prestigious awards and is presented in corporate and private collections all over the world.

The clean, modern design in Finnish crafts and architecture, as well as the early 20th Century European Expressionism, have both had a significant impact on Jasinski's development as a visual artist. Abstract expressionism in the US has served another major source for inspiration. The subject matter and exhibition themes of her recent works reflect a lifelong interest in history, science, psychology, literature, music and fine arts. The strong intellectual undercurrent feeding this exhibit captures Jasinski's creative process which draws it's energy from various cultural achievements of the Old and New World, and with its mental imagery and reflections it is the necessary condition and dominating force behind her creative output.

Portraits is a colorful collection of two-dimensional and three-dimensional work created within the past two years. The complexity of the title is to emphasize the wide variety of mediums (oil paints, oil stick, fluid acrylics, watercolor crayon, pencil, ink, scrap metal and clay on a variety of surfaces) and unifying themes that also contain subcategories (mortality, pain, tragedy, humor, illusion, mystery, historical references and narratives) which are all expressed in this exhibit. Some of these images are symbolic, some are playful, some are serious and some can not be categorized.

Although abstract elements dominate the overall visual impact of this exhibit, imaginary and semi abstract figures are illustrated as well. They each make a coherent message yet they are complex by focusing around the different aspects of the human experience. The strong usage of rich, vibrant colors and unique textures are the key ingredients to what makes this body of work so powerful.

This exhibit will also be on display during the annual Artista Vista event, May 9 from 5-9pm and May 10 from 11am to 4pm.
