Church Street Inn Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Alice Dobbin
The Church Street Inn Gallery, in Charleston, SC is pleased to feature A Passion For Flowers, an exhibit of new works by Alice Ann Dobbin, during the month of Apr., 2003.
Dobbin, a Charleston resident, has been drawing and painting since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Born in an ethnic neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA, she was selected to attend special classes for the artistically gifted while still in elementary school. The classes were held at what later became Carnegie Mellon University, an incubator of talent producing many nationally prominent artists, including Andy Warhol. Dobbin later attended the university throughout her school years.
Also a gifted writer, Dobbin graduated with a degree in journalism from Pennsylvania State University and won numerous graphic awards in the field of communications. She later obtained her art degree, graduating cum laude from Washington and Jefferson college, where she was honored with the prestigious Beta Scholar designation by the president of the college.
Dobbin has taught art at elementary, high school and college levels and has also worked as a private consultant in art and graphic design. During her early years in teaching, she pioneered the integration of art history into the practical arts curriculum for the elementary school level and she has written extensively about the value of art to the learning process of youngsters.
Although her current focus is
oil painting, Dobbin was previously recognized for her etchings,
mezzotints, and watercolors. Her paintings are at the same time
representational and surreal. Dobbin enjoys the play of texture
and pattern, alternating smooth surfaces with heavy swirls of
pigment and she often combines the palette knife with detailed
brushwork to create a whimsical sense of space. Her new pieces
are a departure from the colorful and abstract inspiration she
found in the post-impressionistic fauves. Subdued color,
with an increased sense of realism highlights the new work in
this exhibit.
