Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island, SC, Features Works by Judi Bradford
The Fish or Cut Bait Gallery on Edisto Island,
SC, will present the exhibition, Island to Island, featuring
plein air paintings by Judi Bradford. The exhibit opens
Apr. 19 and continues through May 17, 2003.
Bradford teaches plein air painting and drawing at the Audubon
House and Garden Museum in Key West, FL, and she founded the Key
West Plein Air Painters Group. Bradford also coordinated a show
of that group's paintings at the Smithsonian-affiliated Custom
House Museum in Key West this spring.
"I teach regular weekly classes in Key West and have taught in museums, resorts, cruise ships, conventions and schools. I can teach anyone how to paint, even beginners," says the artist. "Talent is overrated - it's more about observation and practice."
Plein air painting is painting
on site out doors. It was popularized with the Impressionists
who captured the atmospheric conditions of the passing moment. Outdoor
painting became possible when technology provided reliable commercial
tube paints. When artists had to grind their own pigments for
their paints, carting everything across the field was unwieldy. Once
the convenience of tube paints freed the artists from their workbench,
they discovered the joys of painting outdoors. Because of
the transportation restraints, plein air paintings are rarely
larger than 20 x 24 inches, although there are exceptions. Another
aspect of plein air painting is the direct painting method needed
to capture the light and shade in a short period of time - before
the light changes.
Bradford, is also offering a one-day workshop in plein air acrylic
painting on Apr. 18 in conjunction with her exhibit. To register
for the workshop call the gallery at 843/869-2511.
