The Main Branch of the Richland
County Public Library system in downtown Columbia, SC, will present
an exhibition of works by Vera B. Williams, author and illustrator
of children's book. The exhibition will be on display in the Wachovia
Gallery will be on view from Apr. 15 through May 4, 2003.
The exhibit will coincide with RCPL's 17th annual storytelling
festival, A(ugusta) Baker's Dozen: A Celebration of Stories,
which will take place on Apr. 25-26, 2003. Williams, the creator
of many distinguished and beloved picture books, is the featured
guest for this event. For more information on the festival, visit
the web at (www.richland.lib.sc.us/baker.htm).
Williams began working with children's books in 1975, when she
illustrated the Remy Charlip and Lilian Moore book Hooray for
Me! Williams began her career in children's literature with
many years of experience as a poet, graphic designer, educator
and political organizer, as well as a natural sense for storytelling.
Williams' picture book A Chair for My Mother received the
Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for illustration and was named a
Caldecott Honor Book by the American Library Association. The
School Library Journal has also selected several of her books
as Best Children's Books.
