April Issue 2004

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Melinda Fine and Dianne Rodwell

Unfinished Conversations, an exhibition by Melinda Fine will open in Artspace's Upfront Gallery on Apr. 2 and will continue through May 1, 2004, in Raleigh, NC. Road Trip, an exhibition of paintings by Dianne Rodwell will open in Artspace's Lobby on Apr. 2 and will continue through May 1.

Unfinished Conversations continues Fine's visual exploration of processing verbal information. Through her mixed media works, Fine explores the contradictions between objective, subjective and interpretive experience within the realm of interpersonal communication. Simultaneously there is rhythm, order, and chaos. In semantic terms, there is sign, narrative and ambiguity. Rarely is all said and done. It is said, and what remains is the interpretive reverberation.

Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, Fine received her MFA in creative writing from UNC-Greensboro where she studied with Fred Chappell, Robert Watson and Lee Zacharias. She studied printmaking with Beth Grabowski at UNC-Chapel Hill and completed graduate work in graphic design at North Carolina State University School of Design. Currently she is an assistant professor of art at Meredith College where she teaches graphic design and typography. Fine juried into Artspace in 2003.

Rodwell's paintings of "disappearing roads" have been her signature since the 70's. The NC native works in various media, including, oil and encaustic. She has received numerous awards during her 30-year professional career including 2 National Grumbacher awards. Selected local collections include Duke Medical Center, Greater Raleigh Convention & Visitors Bureau, Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, SAS, Shearson Lehman Hutton, UNC Women's & Children's Hospital, and Wake Medical Center.

Artspace is a non-profit visual art center dedicated to presenting quality exhibitions and education programs in an open-studio environment.
