Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, Offers Works by Madeline Dukes, Grace Scherer and Kelly Welch
Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, is presenting Carolina Life Impressions through Apr. 30, 2004, featuring the works of Madeline Dukes, Grace Scherer and Kelly Welch.
Madeline Dukes, born in Beaufort, SC, graduated from Winthrop University with a BA in political science and minored in art. Having married before graduating, she moved with her husband to Clemson, SC, and worked as an assistant designer for Gerber Children's wear in Greenville, SC. Moving to Aiken, SC, next, she worked for a broker for almost two years. In their final move to Clover, SC, she worked in marketing. During these several years she kept painting part time. When her only son fell ill, forcing her to stay at home, she began painting full time. "A mixed blessing" she said in her quiet Southern drawl.
Dukes' work has been in various juried exhibits and group gallery exhibits since 2001. She paints interiors, landscapes, urban scapes and figures.
Grace Scherer is a native of Fredonia, NY, and now resides in Greenville, SC. Graduating from Syracuse University in 1958 with a BFA, she has taught art in public and private schools as well as watercolor workshops in galleries and museums. Scherer currently teaches watercolor at Greenville Tech in SC.
Scherer is the founder and life member of the Western Maryland Watercolor Society, and is a member in Baltimore, Georgia, Pittsburgh and SC watercolor societies. Her work has been in numerous juried exhibits throughout the midwest and southeast. Her paintings depict landscapes, urban scapes, still life, and florals, and are represented by galleries in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and SC.
Kelly Welch lives in Fletcher, NC, and is a relative newcomer to the art world. A prolific and talented plein-aire artist, her media is oils and pastels. Her education is only two workshops with Albert Handell and Ken Backhaus. She has been in numerous shows in the past two years, all throughout North and South Carolina. Welch's enthusiasm for painting shows in her vibrant colors and texture of her landscapes, and technical excellence of her figures.
Come and see how these three women have transformed Carolina scenes of life and landscapes onto canvas.
