Ella Walton Richardson Fine Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Carl Belfor and Lynn Gertenbach

The Ella Walton Richardson Fine Art Gallery in Charleston, SC, will be showcasing the exhibit, Illuminating Impressionism: California, Charleston, & Abroad, from May 7 through June 7, 2004. New works by acclaimed California Impressionists, Carl Belfor and Lynn Gertenbach will be the subject of the exhibit. This husband and wife pair has focused their artistic vision on coastal and mountainous locales near their California home, as well as inspiring landscapes from their extensive travels in Europe and Asia. Gertenbach also turns her gifted artistry to ethereal figurative studies, evocative of artwork done by the most famous of French Impressionists.

Through their joint travels abroad, Belfor and Gertenbach have extended the scope of their focus to such favored locales as Tuscan hillside villages, Spanish street cafés, and rolling French lavender fields. The variety of subject matter reflected in their luminous canvases, mirrors the many accolades both artists have received during their careers.

Gertenbach, an avid explorer of natural beauty, is a Signature Member of the American Academy of Women Artists, the California Art Club, the Oil Painters of America, and the Plein Air Painters of America. Her endless drive to capture imaginative beauty on canvas has led her to such exotic places as Mongolia, Northern China, and Japan. Gertenbach's passion for international cultures now extends to her own biannual show of artwork in Osako, Naro, and Kyoto, Japan.

Born in Wisconsin and partially educated in Denver, CO, Gertenbach attained her art degree from the Colorado Institute of Art, along with continued studies at Layton Art Institute in Milwaukee and the Art Center in Los Angeles. Gertenbach has also benefited from study under such remarkable artists as Sergei Bongart, Phillip Gilkerson, Bernard Dustan, and Arul Raj in India.

With her wide-reaching experience in plein air painting, Gertenbach herself is a gifted instructor in the field. She has given many workshops in Europe, California, and Connecticut. The Ella Walton Richardson Gallery will be hosting Lynn Gertenbach's first en plein air workshop in Charleston from May 10 - 12, 2004. The workshop, entitled The Figure in Nature, will focus on the alla prima method of oil painting, as well as envisioning the human figure as an integral part of a natural landscape. Select locations for en plein air painting will include the Charleston historic district and Magnolia Gardens.

Belfor, a longtime admirer and supporter of his wife's notable artistic talent, began to paint under Gertenbach's guidance. His own respect and love for the beauty of nature is equally evident in his depictions of mountain ranges, ocean landscapes, and canyons lush with native wildflowers. Belfor has studied under such recognized plein air artists as Ken Backhaus, David Jonas, Marlin Linville, Ron Rencher, Matt Smith, and George Strickland. His oil paintings have been exhibited at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, hanging alongside works by Peter Adams, John Asaro, George Carlson, David Leffel, and Mian Situ. With a degree in Motion Picture and Television Production from UCLA, Belfor has blended his various passions for the visual arts by producing the television show, Leonardo Da Vinci: A Personal View.
