Chinese Ancestor Portraits are a tradition that date back to the 16th century. Painted on large scrolls, they were precious family heirlooms that ensured a family's continued good fortune. Honoring one's parents and grandparents, even after death, is a Chinese custom predating Confucius. These scrolls were unrolled in public rituals and kept in private shrines where they were honored with ceremony, food and incense. The subjects, painted before and sometimes after death, were captured with as much detail as possible to insure that no amout of ritual would be wasted on the wrong spirit.
