Nina Liu and Friends Gallery in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Joe Bova

The Nina Liu and Friends gallery in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition of ceramic sculpture by Joe Bova from Apr. 2 - 31, 2004.

Artist/ceramist and educator, Bova, has been a professor of art at Ohio University in Athens since 1990, and served as the Director of the School of Art from 1990 - 1997. From 1971 to 1990 he served on the faculty of the School of Art at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. His first teaching appointment was at Nichols State University in Thibodaux, LA, from 1969-1971. Bova has also taught at the alternative schools of Haystack in Maine, and Penland School of Craft in North Carolina, and he is currently on the Board of Trustees of Penland School.

Bova studied in his native city at the University of Houston (BFA- 1967) and the University of New Mexico (MA-1969). He has been a visiting artist at many schools, notably the University of Georgia's Studies Abroad Program in Cortona Italy (1982 and 1984) and the NY State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (1989). He has also served on the board of the National Council of Art Administrators (NCAA), and as the President of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) 1992- 1994. Bova has also been the recipient of a Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) Fellowship and a Southern Arts Federation - NEA Fellowship.

Bova has exhibited his work since 1988 at such venues as the Pewabic Gallery in Detroit, the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, the Masur Museum of Art in Louisiana and Ostricher Gallery in New Orleans. His art has been exhibited internationally, and is included in several books about ceramics, most recently The Craft and Art of Clay by Susan Peterson. In the Carolinas, Bova has had works included in exhibits at Blue Spiral Gallery in Asheville, NC, the Mint Museum of Craft + Design in Charlotte, NC, and at the Penland Gallery in Penland, NC.
