April Issue 2005

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Linda Ruth Dickinson & Marguerite Jay Gignoux

Greening, an exhibition of paintings by Linda Ruth Dickinson will open at Artspace in Raleigh, NC on Apr. 1, 2005. The exhibit, located in Artspace's Lobby gallery will continue through Apr. 30, 2005. Inside Out, an exhibition of fiber works by Marguerite Jay Gignoux will open in Artspace's Upfront Gallery and will be on view from Apr. 1 - 30, 2005.

Linda Ruth Dickinson is a self-taught artist, born and raised on the island of Taiwan to Midwestern American missionaries. Her work draws on this crosscultural heritage to bridge seemingly disparate outlooks by seeking an expression of the "intangible" through universal iconography in a synthesis of Eastern and Western thought.

Dickinson's work is found in institutional and private collections and has been exhibited from coast to coast in museums, galleries, and other venues. In 1996 her work was featured in a PBS documentary on Sacred Art.

Marguerite Jay Gignoux

Marguerite Jay Gignoux is an innovative textile artist, designer, and educator based in Carrboro, NC. Gignoux creates vibrant mixed media works, art quilts, and hand made books for a variety of schools, museums, and health care centers throughout North Carolina. She enjoys teaching art quilting to all ages and has led dynamic collaborative projects with Elon University, NC Girl Scouts, Meredith College, Durham Academy, and the Penland School of Craft. She received a BA in English from Kenyon College and a Masters of Industrial Design in Fibers from NCSU, College of Design.

Exhibiting actively in the Triangle since 1990, Gignoux's works often combine text with textile. Maintaining a home studio while raising three children, Gignoux finds inspiration and response to the everyday wrinkles that accompany a boisterous family. Her images are often inspired by stories, poems, and memories that speak of personal loss, growth, and wonder. Gignoux uses layers of cloth to reference layers of time. The layers are punctuated and coaxed by acres of stitching to provide a simple lens into memory.
