April Issue 2005
Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Works by Wayne McDowell and Metal Show
Wayne McDowell
Hodges Taylor Gallery is presenting the exhibitions, Wayne McDowell: A Fixed Gaze and Metal: Concrete/ Glass/ Diamonds. Both exhibits will be on view through Apr. 30, 2005.
Both exhibitions present artists that are showing
for the first time with Hodges Taylor. McDowell, a painter from
Wilmington, NC, explains that his paintings explore the difference
between what he sees and perceives while working from life. He
creates a vocabulary through painting that allows this "act
of seeing" to be made physical. Using a limited color
palette and simple everyday objects, McDowell speaks to our inner
selves in a quite but intriguing manner.
Susanna B. Speirs
Metal: Concrete/Glass/Diamonds, curated by Rob Williams, brings together seven nationally and internationally important artists who have chosen metal as the material that best speaks for them. Glass and clay have dominated the world of contemporary objects/crafts. Forged, fabricated or cast: steel, bronze, gold or silver combined with diamonds, African beads, concrete or glass are used to express content of exceptional integrity. These rare and beautiful objects represent the very best in contemporary design, suggesting a powerful trend in the significance of media. Artists include Pat Flynn, Hongsock Lee, Marc Maiorana, Alice and Jack McLean, Rick Smith, and Susanna B. Speirs.
In business since 1981 in uptown Charlotte,
Hodges Taylor is Charlotte's oldest art gallery, committed to
representing artists of the southeastern United States. The
gallery has established itself as a resource for contemporary
art, with a knowledgeable and experienced team. Gallery artists
work in a variety of media including paintings, prints, photograph
and sculpture.
