April Issue 2005
HoFP Gallery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Jorge Vigil
HoFP Gallery in Columbia, SC,
invites you to Brash Bosch Beautiful, featuring original
paintings by Jorge Vigil. The show opens on Apr. 26, and will
run through May 24, 2005.
A native of Peru now living in Paris, Vigil first studied art
at the "Agora de Barranco" painting workshop, and then
at the National School of Fine Arts in Lima where he specialized
in Design and Painting. He studied for five years, learning the
history and techniques of the masters, refining his style, and
beginning the altogether distinct, compelling, and original work
for which he is known today.
In 1990, the French Government awarded him a fellowship to study
in Southern France in the School of Arts and Communication in
Pau. The fresh environment led to new approaches in his work.
Vigil's use of color has grown more subtle, the themes increasingly
personal. He now resides in Paris with his wife, Marie André,
whose visage appears often in the work. This will be his 4th show
in Columbia at HoFP Gallery. He has also shown at Nina Liu and
Friends Gallery in Charleston, SC, as well as Paris, Switzerland,
Lima, Jakarta and Indonesia.
Vigil's work is reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch and M.C. Escher. His works combine surreal, dreamlike images with vivid, sometimes grotesque figures; all rendered in immaculate detail. Vigil depicts all of life in relation to three planes; the inanimate, the animate and the metaphysical or spiritual and his work often explores the interdependence of the three. Ranging from playful to pedantic, Vigil's paintings and drawings never fail to interest.
