RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Thomas Hill, Matt Eskuche and Shane Fero
Redsky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, It's an Animals Life, featuring works by internationally known steel wire artist Thomas Hill, Venetian glass blower Matt Eskuche, and nationally acclaimed glass artist Shane Fero, from Apr. 1 - 30, 2005.
Thomas Hill offer the following artist statement: "I have been a full-time artist since leaving college in 1994 and make pieces both for exhibitions and for corporate, public and private commissions. My pieces are made using mild steel wire, with additions of steel or copper sheet and copper meshes. I consider myself to be both a draftsman and a metalworker. My three-dimensional pieces are based on drawn studies of birds and animals in motion. I find that the steel wire I use behaves in much the same way as a quickly drawn line, and thus I am able to create, in effect, a three-dimensional "sketch".
Matt Eskuche
Matt Eskuche offers the following artist statement: "My current body of work is a result of practice. My focus is concentrated on design, symmetry, and the evolution of form. I repeatedly produce a blown shape, striving to create it with control and uniformity, exploring the nuances of each differing shape. Scale is of great importance to me. Experimenting with the size of a like form, from a tiny miniaturization, to something so large it forces the limits of my abilities and tools. At times, this has led to the creation of new tools and processes that enable me to push the possibilities of the material. Craftsmanship and technique are values that I feel make work pertinent. I hope to express in my work a consciousness, knowledge, and an employment of all these ideas, and an involvement of them in each piece".
The birds and totemic spirits in Shane Fero's work dance to a rhythm created in his imagination. It is this piquancy in both his blown vessels and sculptural work, including boxes, that so delights the viewer. Often using colored glasses in various forms of shards, powders, cane or even stained glass, Fero accomplishes the swirling patterns and mysterious movement of color in his work. His blown pieces are achieved by the controlled forcing of air into clear glass tubes while molten, with the colors added in an overlay technique.
Fero's figurative forms consist of the manipulation of glass rods in a flame torch, alternately adding to and cooling the molten glass in sequential steps until the desired form takes shape. It is in the inventiveness of these works that we glimpse Fero's interest in anthropology, philosophy, mythology and psychology. "I choose to integrate humor and other thought provoking devices in these images," notes Fero. "My work could be described as colorful, serious FUN!"
