April Issue 2005

South Carolina Watercolor Society's Annual Exhibit Comes to Newberry, SC

Anna K. Singley

Watermedia artists from throughout South Carolina will be converging on Newberry, SC, at the end of Apr. 2005 for the South Carolina Watercolor Society's annual meeting and its, 28th Annual Exhibition - Watermedia Plus..., which will be on view at the Newberry Opera House from May 18 through June 20, 2005.

But before the exhibition starts, the public will have the opportunity to view all entries and purchase works at the annual ART MARKET, which will take place at the Opera House on Apr. 29-30, from 10am-4pm and May 2-5, from 9am-6pm. You can make your selections before the juror does.

The juror for this year's exhibition/competition will be Margaret M. Martin of Buffalo, NY. Martin is an accomplished artist as well as art instructor. She juries national and regional exhibitions and is the author of No More Wishy Washy Watercolor, published by North Light Books. Martin will also be conducting a watercolor workshop during her stay in Newberry.

Approximately 75 paintings will be selected from all the entries. It is anticipated that artists will be eligible for approximately $10,000 in cash awards going to the top thirty paintings, including a $1,000 Best in Show award.

The Watercolor Society has made some changes to its annual exhibition. In order to encourage experimentation in water based media, and so push the boundaries of what is thought of as traditional watercolor, this year's eligibility is less restrictive and thus inclusive to more artists. Of course, traditional transparent watercolor is part of this exhibition but it also embraces all watermedia such as acrylic, gouache, water based inks, etc. and it may be applied to any surface. Basically, entries may be executed in aqua media (this excludes water soluble oil paints).

The top thirty award winning paintings from the annual show will travel for a year to locations scheduled by the SC State Museum in Columbia, SC. This allows viewers throughout SC the opportunity to see the best of this exhibition and competition in venues in their own communities. The program is sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

More art will abound in Newberry with the coordination of storefront exhibits that will feature fifteen SCWS artists whose works vary from representational to abstract. The displays will run from Apr. 29 through May 14, 2005. Visitors can stroll along the quaint downtown for a visual treat including landscapes, still-life, colorful abstracts, European cityscapes, humorous and playful views to life, and more. Participating artists and storefronts include: Harry Hansen, Anna Kay Singley and Paula Riddle at Original Works Studio & Gallery, Genie Wilder at A Frame of Mind, Nick Davenport at Bergen's Men Shop, Jennifer Hamilton at Jeze Belles Deli & Coffee House, Ruth Martin at Out On A Whim, Arnold Carrouth at Anderson's Shoes, Betty Walker at Turner's Jewelers & Gifts, Franklin Miller at Artesanos Productions, Bill McCall at Antiques Etc., Laura Dickson at Books On Main, Rosalie Cromer at Michelles, Jennie LaFreniere at Lamplighter Gallery, and Bruce Nellsmith at Blue Door Studio & Summer Media.

The exhibition and related programs have been funded in part by the City of Newberry Accommodations Tax Fund, the City of Newberry, Newberry Downtown Development Association and the SC Arts Commission, which receives funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Since 1977, the South Carolina Watercolor has been promoting the artistic and professional interests of its members as well as providing visual arts programs to the public. The Society works towards achieving its goals by making the accomplishments of its members available to a broad base of South Carolinians.

SCWS, the largest statewide visual arts group, is an active presenting organization. We nurture and promote South Carolina artists by providing exhibition opportunities, special programs to market their original works and coordinate educational programs. In addition, our goals include public outreach and participation in the arts.
