Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Geoffrey Johnson
Personal Space, a new collection of Impressionistic landscapes and urban street scenes by Atlanta artist, Geoffrey Johnson will be on display at Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, from Apr. 22 through May 30, 2005.
In 1990, Johnson received a scholarship to
attend the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He continued
to achieve academic success, winning a merit-based scholarship,
sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company and awarded by the faculty
of the Academy.
Johnson has continued to win recognition from critics and fellow
artists; winning the Philadelphia Water Color Club Award and the
Morris Blackburn Landscape Prize. He was featured as the "Emerging
Artist" in the Jan., 2003 issue of Art & Antiques
Magazine.
A native of Greensboro, NC, Johnson has earned national recognition for his Impressionistic works depicting a variety of scenes, from city street crossings to carnival boardwalks. In particular, two series of paintings - New York City's Grand Central Station and another featuring horses and riders, have become extremely popular among collectors.
Although Johnson is known primarily for his tonal paintings that rely on his skillful interplay of contrast and light to bring his abstracted figures and compositions to life, he also paints colorful landscapes, showcasing his versatility and an ability to paint more traditional subject matter without sacrificing his unique perspective. No matter what the genre, Johnson strives to render faithful representations of the places and things which inspire him, while conveying a strong sense of ephemeral, using the canvas as a tool to capture a particular moment in time.
This transient quality is most pronounced in
his paintings of street scenes populated by stark images of an
anonymous public. One critic has compared the masses of people
portrayed in these works as a "collection of souls all searching
for that perfect path." It is this deep emotional undercurrent
in Johnson's work that allows the viewer a glimpse into the complexity
of the intangible relationship between a city and its inhabitants
- complete strangers and their common experience.
Johnson's work is found in numerous prominent private and corporate
collections including: Emory College, Brenau University Museum,
Turner Broadcasting, Wachovia Bank, and the Duke Mansion, Charlotte.
