Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Presents Art Expo 2006
Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, presents Art Expo 2006, a juried exhibition in the Catherine J. Smith Gallery, featuring a wide range of art works by Appalachian students. The exhibition is on view through Apr. 10, 2006. The works were chosen by guest juror Leon Grodski, a multimedia artist, as well as the founder of LIFT Contemporary in Cherokee, NC.
The works included in Art Expo 2006 were selected from 613 entries of artwork that were put on display in Wey Hall on Mar. 3, 2006. During this event, the juror chose artworks for the exhibition in the Catherine J. Smith Gallery as well as decided monetary awards based on these categories: clay/glass; drawing; fibers; digital imaging; graphic design; metalsmithing; painting; photography; printmaking; and sculpture. Faculty and students also voted for the best work in each category listed above.
Artists included in the exhibition are as follows: Chloe Ayres, Leah Baker, Lauren Boder, Annie Brandegee, Vonda Burris, Emily Carney, Crissy Cole, Holley Compton, Evan Fetty, Susan Garginlo, Emily Harris, Jessie Hewins, Reaksmey Higgins, Suzanne Hobbs, Leslie Hollowell, Annie Huitt, Sergei Isaenko, Bethany Jesseph, Michael Johnson, Christine Kennedy, Jeremy Koling, Leslie Lancaster, Heather Langston, Matt Lawson, Kierston Lindsay, Melissa Markowitz, Ashleigh Miller, M. Tyler Morgan, Jolie Nance, Whitney Oliver, Ryan Prestridge, Emily Proshuto, Emily Purser, Andrew Rogers, Chad Safferstone, Allison Schumacher, Dayna Seman, Mike Sinclair, Emilie Skytta, Charlie Slack, Aaron Smith, Erin Souther, Monica Staples, Sadie Starnes, Lindsey Sutphin, Harlan Toole, Brandon Travis, Jessica Turner, Trevor Waring, Tiffany Weitzen, Ben Weseman, Matthew Williams, Katherine Winkel, and Becky Zaragoza. A selection of works by Suzanne Hobbs, Melissa Markowitz, and Jessica Turner are included in Ceramics and Glass: A Student Focus Exhibition at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts.
Laura Ives, Chair of the Art Department warmly invites the community to attend the Department of Art's annual competitive student exhibition and states, "This juried show displays outstanding work in sculpture, painting, photography, fibers, graphic design, motion graphics, drawing, ceramics, mixed media, and much more."
"Through the generous donations of our local friends of the Art Department, we are able to give talent awards and scholarships to our most exceptional students," says Ives. "This Art Expo promises to be one of the most dynamic student exhibitions yet!"
For this student-centered exhibition, numerous students have participated in the organizing of this event. Art management students Clare Evans, Taylor Leaf, and Megan Phillips have assisted with all facets of the exhibition and programming. Students from AIGA, National Art Educators Association and Student Art League have also contributed time and effort. In addition, the Exhibitions Practicum class collaborated with a Graphic Design 2 class to select a student artist to design publicity materials for Art Expo 2006. Cara Jackson created the designs that were chosen for the exhibition's logo, postcard, poster and other publications. In addition to all the support by students, numerous faculty members have served on the 2006 Art Expo committee: Karen Eberhardt, Elissa Graff, Vicky Grube, Jeana Klein, Mary Prather, Jody Servon, and Sonny Struss.
