Charleston Art & Portraits in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Kelly Green
Kelly
Green is presenting, The Long Journey Home, a photographic
tribute to the third and final crew of Civil War Submarine H.L.
Hunley at Charleston Art & Portraits in Charleston, SC, from
Apr. 15 to May 15, 2006. This month marks the second anniversary
of the burial of the Hunley Crew in historic Magnolia Cemetery
in Charleston.
After 137 years of being lost at sea, the Hunley, the first submarine
ever to sink another boat, the USS Housatonic, in combat, was found
just outside Charleston Harbor, and 9 years later, her crew would
finally come home for burial, Apr. 17, 2004.
The images in Green's exhibit are the documentation of that event. "
This is a departure from my normal body of work (colorful floral
abstracts,)" says Green, " in that it's documenting
a historical event and shot entirely in Black and White. I
shot the entire ceremony in B&W film in order to honor the
time period."
There were approximately 10,000 Civil War re-enactors (or more)
in attendance that day and even more people lined the streets
leading to Magnolia Cemetery, where the crew were laid to rest
beside the first and second crews of the Hunley. These brave
gentlemen died during experimental voyages of the Hunley. The
third crew then successfully made naval history, but lost their
lives on their valiant efforts.
"It was a day that I'll never forget," says Green of
the historic burial. "And we trust that this dramatic
pictorial presentation will not soon be forgotten by any who see
it," says Cecile Langham Cothran, portrait artist and owner
of the gallery.
