April Issue 2006
Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers Works by JoAnn Meier
Hilton
Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, is presenting, Clay
My Way, featuring clay potter by JoAnn Meier, through Apr.
22, 2006.
The pieces in the exhibit run the gamut from practical, functional
forms to whimsical ornamentation. Meier describes the collection
as "from functional to just fun!" She gathers her inspiration
from her travels and her surroundings. Among the items on display
are plates with a mosaic design inspired by a visit to Pompeii,
a lemon-shaped dish representing the abundant lemons of Capri,
and a fish dedicated to her son, a fly fishing guide on the Colorado
and Yellowstone Rivers. This whimsical fish is splashed with color
and life.
When Meier says that she is going to "throw a plate or a cup," there is no need to duck. She means that she is throwing clay on the potter's wheel to create the shape. Some of Meier's works are hollow, some are rolled slab and still others are hand built. They are painted with under-glazes, then fired, then painted with more additional glazes. As a result, most of her pieces can be used to serve food or to hold cut flowers. They are fragile, however, and should be hand-washed, rather then run through the dishwasher.
All of the pottery in the display is for sale, and each carries an interesting story about the inception of the idea for the piece and how it was created.
