Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Mary Jane Martin
It's not often that you can have Carte Blanche, but that is what Mary Jane Martin, the featured artist at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, is offering the public from Apr. 11 through May 6, 2006.
Martin often quotes Cezanne when talking about her work. "Painting from nature is not copying the object, it is realizing one's sensations." Her paintings are a means of expressing her need to communicate her feelings about the subject matter. She says, "My subject matter is based on my surroundings and my observations of those surroundings. I am fascinated with the way the wind blows the palm fronds and creates a music that is different from the way it rustles the leaves of the oaks. I can sit and watch the water change from dark to light, blue to black and rough to smooth in the course of an hour, and long to communicate those feelings of awe and power on a canvas or piece of paper."
Martin's subject matter varies, as does her method of expressing her emotions about that subject. She may be painting something indoors or outside, nature to abstract and animals or people. She uses water media on canvas or paper to express herself. She makes print, paint and collage pieces that are built upon layer by layer. Sometimes she even renders the same subject in several different mediums until she "feels that I have said all I have to say about it."
Martin is a member of the Beaufort Art Association and Gallery, the Hilton Head Art League, The International Society of Experimental Painters, and the South Carolina Watercolor Society. She has received numerous awards on the regional, state and national level for her artwork. Her work can be also be seen at the Beaufort Art Association Gallery and Art & Soul Gallery in Beaufort, SC, and the Portfolio Gallery in Columbia, SC.
The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and enhancing the art skills of its members. It operates a volunteer-managed gallery for the sale of artwork created by its members, operates intensive week-long workshops with nationally-renowned art instructors and the Art Academy on Cordillo Parkway, staffed with local artist/instructors who conduct art classes for all levels of skill in a variety of mediums.
