Upstate Visual Arts in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Sharon Linnehan
Upstate Visual Arts in Greenville, SC, will present the exhibit, A Breath of Fresh Air, featuring the work of local artist and Assistant Professor of Art at Erskine College, Sharon Linnehan, at the Upstate Visual Arts Gallery, from Apr. 3 - 19, 2006.
Originally from Milwaukee, Linnehan received a BFA from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN; an MA from Michigan State University; and an MFA from the University of North Dakota.
Each piece in A Breath of Fresh Air is a monotype a technique in which a single print is created by painting with inks onto a non-absorbent surface such as metal and then transferring the resulting image to paper by means of an etching press.
Linnehan's monotpyes celebrate hopefulness and encouragement through meaningful juxtaposition. For instance, in some of her works, said Linnehan, "disparate accidental marks are placed upon a field of orderly spaces and shapes. The spontaneous form of these marks alludes to the lack of control we have over certain situations in our lives," she continued, "[while] the open, more restful spaces and shapes are intended to evoke . . . our hopes, dreams, and memories."
According to the artist, these prints were ultimately made to encourage and console. "The intention of these non-objective images," said Linnehan, "is to uplift one's spirit and encourage the viewer to choose hope."
Linnehan is a member of Upstate Visual Arts, Greenville's only non-profit organization dedicated solely to assisting local visual artists. The Upstate Visual Arts Gallery serves to further the mission of Upstate Visual Arts: to elevate the stature of visual art and educate the public to its significance. UVA also exhibits at the Greenville Commerce Club.
