53 Cannon St Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Landis Powers
53 Cannon St Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Reconstructed Forest, featuring new paintings in acrylic by Landis Powers, on view from Apr. 13 through May 5, 2007.
Currie McCullough, now known for a keen eye and ferreting out the best artists in the Southeast, spotted one of the small paintings hanging on the wall of the salon Landis owns on Calhoun Street in Charleston. "As soon as I spotted it, I asked if there were more like it," McCullough confesses. A trip to the artist's cramped studio on James Island revealed a treasure trove of works. McCullough found paintings everywhere. She recalls, "The 18 that comprise this show were all very similar in style and execution in a range of sizes. They are beautifully textured and richly colored as well as masterfully painted. The paintings have the wonderful dichotomy of being really interesting from the more literal standpoint as luscious paintings of forests, but also remind us that they are purely paint, shape, color and form. Each canvas portrays sweeping masses of paint, lines and color, woven together by strong totemic vertical elements."
The paintings exist as a series; Landis approaches his work in a very intellectual way. The artist sites influences as varied as William Turner, Joan Mitchell, Brian Rutenberg, and Eva Carter.
"I am most interested in a forest that becomes abstract in application, and composition, when dealing with space," says Powers.
The exhibit will be open to the public by appointment only.
