Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Features Works by Joseph Patrick
Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, will present the exhibit, Beyond Borders - Joseph Patrick, in Gallery A & B in the University's Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, on view from Apr. 6 through July 28, 2007.
Patrick and his wife, Genie, spend their summers in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the artist finds the area rich in inspiration. Working in watercolors, oils, photography, and drawing media, Patrick sees that the local market's everyday life of tarps, crates, and ropes often is ignored by the people who live and work around it. Patrick, however, finds the hidden beauty among the stalls' dramatic lighting, shapes, lines, and textures, and the city's domestic patios and gardens also challenge him to catch the peaceful but vibrant and abundant setting.
The artist describes his work "as being like stages for human action ... past, present, and future." He conveys awareness of time, both passing and standing still. The Mexican streets, buildings, and gardens become metaphors for the lives passing through them.
Patrick currently lives and works in Iowa City, IA, where he recently retired as a professor of art at the University of Iowa. He received his BFA from the University of Georgia and his MFA from the University of Colorado. He started teaching at Iowa in 1965 and served as head of the drawing program in the School of Art and Art History. Patrick's work has been featured in many exhibitions and can be found in many public and private collections, including Interstate Assurance Company, Pella Corporation, Farm Bureau, and Hallmark Cards, Inc.
