Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Presents Annual Juried Art Exhibition

Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, is presenting Art Expo 2007, a juried exhibition in the Catherine J. Smith Gallery, featuring a wide range of artworks by 51 Appalachian students. Of the 643 works submitted for jurying, 80 were selected for the exhibition which will be on view through Apr. 10, 2007.  
 
The artworks in this exhibition were selected by guest juror, Joyce Rudinsky, a visual artist whose work explores the convergence of art, entertainment, and information and new information structures. Rudinsky is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC.

The works included in Art Expo 2007 were selected from numerous entries of artwork that were on display during open house in Wey Hall on Mar. 2, 2007. The following artists have works in the exhibition: Brad Armsworth, Attabel Artiga, Nicola Bajalia, Krista Betz, Tegan Brace, Selene Briggs, Sally Brincefield, Emily Carney, Christine Cole, Holley Compton, Erika Crosier, Danny Desmarais, Emily Dixon, Hope Doe, James Easley, John Edge, Alyse Egan, Chris Engler, Evan Fetty, Michelle Gouge, Rachel Haycraft, Laura Hersey, Reaksmey Higgins, Annie Huitt, Cara Jackson, Michelle T. Jacobs, Sarah Johnson, Christine Kennedy, Teresa Koch, Megan Koslick, Heather Langston, Matt Lawson, Jennifer Livingston, Melissa Markowitz, Ashley McDaniel, Ashleigh Miller, Kara Ann Needham, Heather Owens, Jennifer Povick, Emily Proshuto, Doug Ransdell, Austin Saylor, Dayna Seman, Michael Sinclair, Erin Souther, Sadie Starnes, Taylor Staton, Jessica Turner, Tiffany Weitzen, Ben Wesemann, and Daniel Wiggins
 
During the awards ceremony, prizes and awards based on these categories: clay/glass; drawing; fibers; foundations/fundamentals/digital imaging; graphic design; metalsmithing; painting; photography; printmaking; and sculpture were announced. The chair of the Art Department, Laura Ives, states, "We encourage you to attend the Department of Art's annual student art exhibition, Art Expo 2007. This competitive exhibit recognizes and celebrates the exceptional artwork of our students." Ives continues, "This year's juror, Joyce Rudinsky, is a visual artist working with electronic and interactive media to investigate a variety of issues impacted by technology. I hope that you will make an effort to join us for the
opening reception for this extraordinary exhibit of student artwork."

In keeping with this event being student-centered, numerous students, including student coordinator Jennifer Livingston, have participated in the organizing of this event. Gallery assistants Reese Bolton, Tanith Brehmer, Blair Brown, James Easley, Sara Gordon, Kara Needham, Megan Sayre, Dayna Seman, and Maloree Sheets have assisted with all facets of the exhibition and programming. Students from AIGA, National Art Educators Association and Student Art League have also contributed time and effort. In addition, the Exhibitions Practicum class collaborated with a Graphic Design II class to select a student artist to design publicity materials for Art Expo 2007. Doug Ransdell created the designs that were chosen for the exhibition's logo, postcard, poster and other publications.
