Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord, NC, Offers Works by Noyes Capehart Long and Others

The Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord, NC, is presenting several new exhibitions in its newly renovated galleries including: The Way of the Cross, a series of 14 original woodcuts by Noyes Capehart Long depicting the final journey of Jesus down the Via Dolorosa, in the Adam Crawford Grant Jr. Memorial Gallery, on view through May 5, 2007; The Private Diary, a diverse series of 20 mixed media paintings on which Noyes Capehart Long writes his journal, will be in Gallery 2, on view through May 5, 2007; and in Gallery 3 and the Hallway Gallery, on view through May 5, 2007, will be a variety of works including works by Elizabeth Bradford who created a six-inch painting each day for year, which culminated in Selected Works - 366: A Visual Journal, Mary Blackwell-Chapman and Kimberly Varnadoe's artists' books and boxes, offering a variety of book forms, including serious, playful, complex and simple, Jennifer Kincaid's Journal Bowls which explore the ideas of time, age and basic human emotions using simplified figures and forms in clay, Eddie Smith's offers his chalices, both functional and unique, and works by members of the Southern Piedmont Woodturners Association, including: Russell Callaway, Charles Farrar, Dwight Hartsell, Roland Hege, Alex Kornblum, Joe Luther, Barry Russell, Jim Smith, Bob Temple and David Winkowski.
Noyes Capehart Long is a retired Appalachian State University professor whose work has been shown at the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Mint Museums. The works in The Way of the Cross are featured in the book, Walking the Way of Sorrows, issued by Morehouse Publishing.
Many of the works contained in Long's The Private Diary show are published in his Dancingfish Press book, The Private Diary of Noyes Capehart, which highlights 35 years of his "diary" series. He is featured in the March issue of Our State magazine.
Long will discuss his work at two free gallery talks. On Apr. 3, at 7pm, he will talk about his insights and inspirations for The Way of the Cross. Most of the works being exhibited, as well as Long's books, will be for sale through the arts council's new gallery shop.
The Cabarrus Arts Council Galleries are being created as part of a renovation in which three rooms on the first floor of the Historic Cabarrus Courthouse are being turned into art galleries, the theatre on the second floor in the old courtroom space will be transformed into a state-of-the-art performing space and the currently unfinished third floor will be finished to contain dressing rooms and offices. So far the arts council has raised more than $300,000 for the project and future programming, including $100,000 from Sue and Roy Davis to name the theatre the Davis Theatre, $125,000 from the Cannon Foundation for theatre renovations, $25,000 from Alice Grant to name a gallery in honor of her late husband Judge Adam Crawford Grant Jr., $25,000 from Philip Morris USA to support programming and marketing, $10,000 from CESI to name the stage in the theatre and $4,000 from the Cabarrus Community Foundation to help organize the first year's gallery exhibitions. Cabarrus County funded $50,000 of the overall building renovations and the City of Concord, $20,000.
The Cabarrus Arts Council's primary mission is to bring the arts to all of Cabarrus County's citizens. Its programs include Students Take pART in the ARTs, which brings a professional performing arts program to every grade each year in local schools; Pops in the Park concerts; and Art Walks in downtown Concord.
