Michael Johnson, on view in the Hallway Gallery through April 29, 2007; and the 4th Biennial Hub City Juried Art Exhibition, on view in the Milliken & Parsons Galleries through June 17, 2007. The Bikers: Expression of Freedom exhibit will move to the Burwell Gallery to be on view from May 7 through June 24, 2007.
ABSTRABET, by Lynn Baney of Martinsburg, PA is an amazing fusion of abstract visual art combined with math, science and the written language. Baney has created 26 original watercolors representing a different letter of the English alphabet with each one composed of many abstract symbols that stand for words and ideas that begin with that letter. The actual letter is NOT visible in the painting itself! This abstraction of the alphabet leads to a series of artworks that are a wonderful visual puzzle, having the power to stimulate the viewer both artistically and conceptually. The viewer is challenged to find the repeating letters and decode the image. ABSTRABET is an invitation for children, students and adults to discover the joy of creativity and the beauty of form for its own sake while strengthening their analytical and intellectual skills.
Bikers: Expression of Freedom by J. Michael Johnson of Taylors, SC, is a photojournalist's journey into the motorcycle lifestyle. These fascinating images show bikers from all walks of life as they participate in Bike Week in Daytona, rallies in Cherokee, NC, and Rolling Thunder in Washington, DC. This show is a continuation of Moving Sculpture: The Art of the Motorcycle a 2004 fundraiser for the Museum of Art that celebrated the art and design of the motorcycle world. From the latest in biker fashion to custom built and hand painted choppers to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Johnson gives us a colorful and moving glimpse into the heart and soul of the biker. Since 1997, Johnson's photographs have been published in Easy Rider, Biker and In the Wind.
The 4th Biennial Hub City Juried Art Competition
& Exhibition includes paintings, drawings, sculpture,
ceramics and mixed media. This year's juror is Lisa Wainright,
Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor of Art History
at The Art Institute of Chicago. Dr. Wainright is a lecturer and
the author of numerous articles about contemporary American art.
