Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton
Head Island, SC, Features Works by John K. Crum and Sheri Farbstein
The Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, will present two exhibits including: Sailing Among the Clouds, featuring works by John K. Crum, and Out from the Earth into the Fire, featuring works by Sheri Farbstein. Both exhibitions will be on view from Apr. 14 through May 10, 2008.
John Crum's whimsical approach to life using boats as his metaphor, explores emotional issues in a light and often humorous way: "I jokingly say I paint "en brain air" as all of my paintings are generated from my imagination. Working on several paintings at a time, this series lets me explore different painting styles, techniques and applications, while keeping true to the original concept."
Crum's oil painting Waiting for High Tide in the Lowcountry was featured on the 2007 cover of The Arts Council of Beaufort County ART NEWS quarterly and his Big Love graced the cover of PINK magazine's Feb. '08 issue for Valentine's Day!
Crum's paintings can be viewed locally at: Picture This Gallery on Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie Island Gallery on Daufuskie and The Gallery in Beaufort, SC.
Crum received his formal art training at The Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL. Upon graduation he enjoyed a career in graphic design and illustration. He later became a Creative Director for an educational book and magazine publisher.
When asked to do the show and write something about her work, Sheri Farbstein realized that she had spent most of her adult life up to her elbows in clay of all types experimenting, teaching, and learning - and loving every moment of it!
Farbstein enjoys trying all sorts of ideas, designs and techniques. Most often she works in series using the same techniques and colors until she feels she has taken that subject to its limits. Then she moves on to another series of creations. Farbstein never seems to be at a loss for things to make, or ideas to build upon. Sometimes a series lasts for months or years, such as her music pieces, where she had experimented with sculpture, wall reliefs, and pottery using the music theme throughout. Farbstein adores the theme of the family and has created several sculptures, bowls, wall reliefs and figurative vessels using the family unit as a motif. Her painted kimono sculptures are a study using the kimono shape to create intricate underglaze paintings.
When Farbstein is not creating clay objects, she teaches, lectures and gives workshops throughout the region. She has had about sixty shows, and has been fortunate to be in many corporate and private collections, and museums.
The Art League of Hilton Head is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the visual arts through education, exhibitions and partnerships for the cultural enrichment of the community and its visitors. It operates a gallery staffed by volunteers for the display and sale of artwork by its members.
